Kochi: The state government will have to take the initiative for proposal to form a joint venture company with the Railways for undertaking the development of railway infrastructure in Kerala, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu told reporters on Thursday. The previous government headed by Mr. Oommen Chandy has signed a MoU for the formation of JV with Railways in January.

“I hope the new government in the state will take the necessary steps to implement MoU”, Mr. Prabhu said. The matter will be discussed during the meeting with the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, he added. The completion of the formalities to form the JV Company will be crucial for the development of railway infrastructure projects in the state including the proposed suburban corridor in the state.

On the Palakkad rail coach factory Mr. Prabhu said the Railways is still looking for private partner for the implementation of the project. The project is planned under Public-Private-Partnership model and the Railways is yet to identify the private partner, he added. On the reports about willingness of Steel Authority of India (SAIL) to be partner for the venture he said that Railways has no objection in SAIL partnering in the venture.

On the long delay for the coach factory, the minister said the mere announcement of the project alone will not be enough for the realization of the venture. Inaugurating an investor awareness programme organised by the Ernakulam Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India Mr. Prabhu said Railways is planning to entrust many development works to companies to be formed with the stake of the Central and State Governments.
