Hyderabad: The BRS has remained silent on Trinamul Congress president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's proposal for opposition unity against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The West Bengal CM had proposed two days ago that the Congress should support regional parties in the Assembly elections where they are strong, and the regional parties would support the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls where they are strong.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had supported the proposal, and had said that Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao held the same opinion.
Despite that, there was no response or clarification from the BRS leadership. The buzz in BRS circles is that it would not be possible for the party to support the Congress in Telangana in any form, and it would not be possible to react to Mamata Baneerjee or Akhilesh Yadav's statements in public since the Congress is the prime opposition for the BRS and the Telangana Assembly polls were just five months away.
BRS leaders that favouring the proposal would create confusion among the party leaders, cadre and even voters and give an opportunity for the BJP to rake up "BRS-Congress alliance."
The Congress is a minor player in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are due in 2026 and 2027 respectively. Party sources said the statements did not figure in the joint meeting on Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday.
