Chennai: Voters in several polling stations in Velacherry and Alandur and certain sections in Virugambakkam had to depend on booth agents to obtain the booth slips to vote. Increased voters’ awareness campaign apart, pleasant weather ensured steady turnout of electorate since morning on Monday which has been declared a poll holiday.
People turned up in large numbers with their family members to exercise their franchise. Several areas including Alandur, Adambakkam, Velachery, K.K. Nagar, Vadapalani and T. Nagar saw brisk polling since early morning.
Some of those who could did not receive the booth slips sought and obtained the same from the booth agents who were eager to help.
Surprisingly, unlike the previous elections, this time the atmosphere in the vicinity of the polling stations was rather calm and polling appeared to be a tame affairs. It lacked the clamour especially the frenzied agents beckoning voters walking towards the polling station to verify their names in the rolls and obtain the booth slips.
But as both the entry and exit routes of the polling booths were temporarily blocked with medians, voters who came on two-wheelers had to park the vehicles near the medians.
Voting in the South Chennai area had been uneventful and the booths in Vadapalani, Valasaravakkam, Virugambakkam areas too saw teaming crowds as many cine stars descended to cast their votes in the locality.
