Kerala Assembly Elections: Slogan war precedes ballot battle
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All the three political parties have come out with slogans to attract the voters. While the BJP’s slogan is, ‘Kerala at its road’s end, BJP to show the way’, the UDF’s slogan is ‘the governance should continue, Kerala should grow’ and the LDF's slogan is that ‘LDF will come, everything will be alright’.
Interestingly, there are reports that BJP national president Amit Shah is not happy with the absence of the BJP’s slogan in posters. But leaders belonging to the UDF and LDF claim that their slogans are much more realistic. The BJP’s slogan was released by senior party leader and Nemom candidate O. Rajagopal here during the last week of March at a function which was also attended by party chief Kummanam Rajasekharan who is also the contestant from Vattiyoorkavu and cricketer S. Sreesanth, Thiruvananthapuram central candidate. A senior BJP leader told DC that they had approached a private PR agency for catchy slogans that could woo voters.
“Along with our panel of slogans, the PR agency also came out with their ideas. Finally the State leadership zeroed in on ‘Kerala at its road’s end, BJP to show the way’ as we thought it was the best that conveyed the feelings against the two fronts which have been ruling the State for six decades”, said a BJP general secretary.
Another party source told DC that when Amit Shah had come down to the State last week for the official launch of the NDA’s State chapter, he was disappointed to note that the entire campaign was focusing on BJP and not taking into account the role of the NDA.
“When Amit Shah travelled to Thalassery and from there to Paravur Puttingal fireworks mishap, he was peeved to see that NDA’s posters were nowhere to be seen. He has instructed the BJP State leadership to remove all the existing posters and bring in the pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kummanam and Bharat Dharma Jana Sena leader Vellapally Natesan”, said a BJP source.
While the UDF Government’s slogan has been ‘care and development’, they are emphasizing continuation of their governance. Sitting MLA of Thrikkakara, Benny Behanan who was denied a seat at the nth hour, told DC that it was a private event management company with leanings towards the Congress that came up with the slogan – ‘the governance should continue, Kerala should grow’.
LDF convener Vaikkom Viswan claimed that they were giving ‘hope’ to the voters which the UDF has denied by being involved in corruption scandals.
