Telugu Desam to contest LS polls, ready to tie up with left

The TD won two seats out of the 13 it contested in the Assembly elections.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Telugu Desam, which saw little activity after its rout in the Assembly elections, on Saturday decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections and said it is open to tying up with the Left.

The TD won two seats out of the 13 it contested in the Assembly elections. Of these, Mr Sandra Venkata Veeraiah will join the TRS.

In this backdrop, the party politburo met at NTR Trust Bhavan on Saturday and resolved to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

Politburo member R. Chandrasekhar Reddy said the meeting chaired by state unit president L. Ramana had decided to finalise the list of seats in a day or two. The party has decided to consider positively any interest the Left shows in contesting with it.

Replying to a query, he said the party retained its stength. In the Assembly elections, the TD was second in 11 seats out of the 13 in which it contested. He said the party had secured 7.25 lakh votes.

The party had a strong hold over the Telangana region since its inception and some of its leaders are now the leading lights of the TRS including Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. The others are in the Congress and the BJP, and a few remain in the party.
