Over 9,600 poll booths identified as sensitive
Chennai: As many as 9,630 polling booths in the state have been identified as sensitive and will be provided additional security cover to ensure free and fair polls on May 16, chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni said on Wednesday.
Additional paramilitary force would arrive on the first week of May and all safety steps put in place to make polling a democratic success.
During Lok Sabha polls about 7,300 polling booths were identified as sensitive, he said. Verifications of about 75,000 electronic voting machines is underway and training for all government staff is also underway.
In order ensure active participation of differently-abled, 17 polling booths will be disabled friendly with slop ramps, wheelchairs and Braille enable voting machines will be set up in it for the first time. Out of the 64,000 polling booths, more than 63,000 booths will have slop ramps, he said.
On complaints received, the CEO said so far received around 2,449 complaints have been received. Meanwhile flying squads in Thiruvannamalai seized Amma baby care units meant for distribution to nearby government primary centres and maternity hospitals.
Poll officials declared baby care kits as not essential medicines and sealed the consignment in a government godown. In Dindigul, the flying squads seized pressure cookers and helmets that had stickers of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
