What is left is to move on

On all these occasions the LDF leadership was found wanting in evolving a consensus within the front and taking coalition partners on board.

Thiruvananthapuram: Since the LDF government came to power in May 2016, the two major constituents CPM and CPI have sparred on many issues resulting in serious differences in the ruling coalition.

But Thomas Chandy issue which hogged the headlines for past three months and finally culminated in his resignation has brought into sharp focus the lack of cohesiveness in the ruling front yet again. Earlier, the CPM-CPI had sparred on issues such as UAPA being slapped against human rights activists and artists; Jishnu case; law academy agitation; Right to Information Act being made applicable to all Cabinet decisions; encounter killings of Maoists in Nilambur forests and government's police policy.

On all these occasions the LDF leadership was found wanting in evolving a consensus within the front and taking coalition partners on board.

The utter confusion in the Left camp on such occasions reflected the lack of discussions and interactions among leaders of the front.

Many believe that it's time for the LDF leadership to work as a cohesive entity to deliver goods without courting further controversies. The government needs to bring its focus back on innovative and radical programmes launched in various sectors.

The four mega missions- Life, Ardram, Haritha Keralam and modernisation of education sector- cover landless and homeless people, environment, education and health sectors and require to be implemented effectively on the ground.

Many of the programmes directed mainly at marginalised sections, which are yet to come on par with the development achieved by other sections, have to be taken on priority.

The LDF government that promised to present an alternative model of governance and development to the country against the one led by Modi at the Centre, will have to put its house in order to rise up to people's expectations.
