District Congress Committee recast awaits nod from top

A top AICC leader informed that Rahul Gandhi is likely to take over the role of Congress president on Saturday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The AICC leadership is expected to announce the final list of DCC presidents on Saturday in all likelihood. The KPCC leadership is keenly awaiting a call from the central leadership to take a final decision on the 14 DCC presidents. With Parliament session starting on Wednesday, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is expected to hold talks with the Congress MPs from the state in a couple of days.

A top AICC leader told this newspaper that the central leadership has almost finalised the list which is expected to be announced on Saturday. At the same time, he also informed that Rahul Gandhi is likely to take over the role of Congress president on Saturday. “If it doesn’t happen on Saturday, Rahul Gandhi will take over the role from his mother Sonia Gandhi at a later date,” said the top AICC leader. At present, a plethora of DCC leaders who are aspirants, KPCC secretaries and KPCC general secretaries, are camping in the national capital, lobbying for the post.

“We have held detailed discussions with a cross section of Congress leaders from the state at the DCC and KPCC levels. In a day or two, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is expected to hold talks with the Congress MPs who will be in Delhi to attend the Parliament session,” added the top AICC leader. He added that social configuration is also being considered while the appointments are made without compromising on the merit of the leaders. At the same time, KPCC leadership is expecting two women representation in the DCC presidents’ role.

Women Congress leaders who are in the rat race for the DCC chief include KPCC general secretary Lathika Subhash (Kottayam) and Mahila Congress State president Bindu Krishna and Ramani P. Nair (both trying for Thiruvananthapuram). However, this is the first time AICC leadership had come out with a strenuous exercise holding several rounds of talks with a plethora of leaders from the state. The AICC leader said that they are hoping that the new crop of DCC presidents would rise up to their expectations.
