KPCC president calls Hindi push ‘language chauvinism’

Mr Ramachandran urged the BJP to learn from Tamil Nadu’s anti-Hindi movement of 1967 which turned violent.

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president Mullapally Ramachandran has warned against the BJP-led government’s language chauvinism while Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala lamented attempts to divide the country.

Mr Ramachandran urged the BJP to learn from Tamil Nadu’s anti-Hindi movement of 1967 which turned violent.

He alleged that the BJP was leading the country to ‘one country, one language’ which is nothing but mad.

He said ‘one country, one religion’ would be its next agenda leading to fascism.

“This move would only divide the country which is going to be a repeat of what the British did. Language fanaticism will doom the nation,” he said.

He said his party was not against any particular language. But the latest move to promote Hindi is nothing but to deviate the attention from the grave financial crisis.

Mr Chennithala alleged that it is the Sangh Parivar’s agenda to divide the country and the people.

“All languages have got equal importance and several court verdicts have stated that Hindi has not been provided special national language,” he said. He also pointed out that when the Union government is trying to impose Hindi as the main language, a group of people were on fasting demanding permission to take PSC tests in Malayalam.

“BJP government’s attempt to impose Hindi and the neglect being shown towards Malayalam by the LDF government should be equally opposed,” he said.
