BJP to soon make a decision on opposition leader position

MANGALURU: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is in the opposition bench in the Karnataka Assembly after five-years has the crucial task of selecting a formidable leader to spearhead the opposition ranks.

During previous stints in the opposition, the assembly saw BS Yediyurappa and Jagadish Shettar assume the role of opposition leader.

However, with their absence this time around and several senior leaders facing defeat, the BJP is compelled to seek a capable and vibrant leader.

Several prominent names are currently making rounds in political circles, including former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, R Ashoka, CN Ashwath Narayan, Basangouda Patil Yatnal, Aravind Bellad, and V Sunil Kumar.

According to a senior BJP leader, Bommai is the frontrunner due to his experience as Chief Minister and his knowledge of government workings.

However, other senior leaders are also vying for the position.

"If Bommai is not selected or if he declines the offer, the party may look to a leader from the Lingayat community like Basangouda Patil Yatnal or Aravind Bellad. Alternatively, if the party wishes to select a leader from the Vokkaliga community, R Ashoka or Ashwath Narayan are possibilities, having previously served as Deputy Chief Ministers," he added.

As the BJP mulls over their decision, the name of Sunil Kumar is also being floated as a possible contender. The party is expected to hold a formal meeting to discuss the issue and make a decision shortly.

With the Congress holding an absolute majority in the assembly, the BJP needs a strong opposition leader who can effectively challenge the ruling party, expose their mistakes, and make an impact in the political arena.
