Telangana HC seeks video evidence on MLC disqualification

Hyderabad: The HC on Wednesday directed the secretary of the Legislative Council, to submit the video clippings with subtitles in English by Thursday of the statements of former MLCs Ramulu Naik, Bhoopathi Reddy and Yadava Reddy, which was taken as evidence by the Chairman of the Council to disqualify the MLCs.

The Chairman of the Council came to the conclusion that the MLCs had defected to the Congress party from the TRS going by the video clippings which were telecast.

The vacation bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice Shameem Akther was dealing with the petitions of the disqualified MLCs, urging the court to set aside the disqualification orders of the Chairman of the Council.

As the petitioner’s arguments were completed, the court adjourned the case to Thursday for the arguments of the Additional Advocate General of TS state, appearing for the Chairman and the Secretary of the Council in support of the decision to disqualify the three MLCs.

Mr Salman Kurshid who appeared for the disqualified MLC Ramulu Naik, submitted that his client was nominated to the Legislative Council under the Governor's quota, which was a special provision to nominate persons with special knowledge, intellectuals with practical experience. He also pointed out that the website of Council had indicated that Ramulu Naik was nominated and did not belong to any political party.

However, the ACJ enquired about the association of Ramulu Naik with the TRS Party as the president of SC, ST cell of that party. “Why does the petitioner need to convey thanks to the opposite party leader for uplifting Tribals, by meeting in public,” the ACJ asked.
