Kerala Police seize steel bombs at Antheri

A total of 11 steel bombs and bomb-making materials were seized from Theruvanparambu, near Kallachi last month.

KOZHIKODE: The long and by and large peaceful campaign period for the elections came to a disturbing end in Kozhikode district on Sunday with the police recovering five steel bombs at Antheri, near Valayam in Nadapuram constituency. While the UDF said the CPM was involved in bomb-making, the latter denied saying the party has no role in it.

Vadakara rural SP Prateesh Kumar said the bombs were defused and the forces are working round-the-clock to prevent untoward incidents. “We are very cautious as the political fight got intensified this time compared with the last,” he said. No party would be allowed to threaten voters and the forces are given instructions to prevent people from gathering in groups.

“We shall not allow groups as campaign time is over,” he said, adding that additional Central forces which have reached the district will be stationed in the constituencies. UDF candidate in Nadapuram K. Praveen Kumar who visited the area said the UDF had got the wind of the CPM game plan to scare UDF voters away.

“The Theruvanparambu blast had indicated that bomb-making units were functioning in the constituencies such as Vadakara, Nadapuram and Kuttiady,” he said. A total of 11 steel bombs and bomb-making materials were seized from Theruvanparambu, near Kallachi last month. Police had confirmed that the blast occurred while making bomb.

The CPM district committee had denied any connection with the party and demanded comprehensive probe into the blast. Local residents say that it was the third time big and small blasts were taking place in the region around Kummamkode after the elections were declared.
