DMDK middle level leaders may shift loyalty
Madurai: The consternation of DMDK middle level leaders over their party founder Vijayakanth’s decision to go it alone in the coming election has be-gun reflecting in defections. A message circulated in social media that DMDK functionary, Periyapattinam ‘Singai’ Bazeer from Ramathapuram, had joined the DMK in the presence of K.R. Periyakaruppan, DMK election in-charge of the district, on Monday was found to be a hoax (as the man had shifted his loyalty a month ago). There is, however, a strong indication that other middle level party functionaries might move to the DMK at some point soon.
Singai Bazeer had repeatedly attempted to sideline DMDK Ramanathapuram district secretary Jinnah, but he had not succeeded and hence moved to the DMK, said DMDK functionaries. They also quickly added that he had made right decision because Vijayakanth’s resolve to face the election alone may have shattered the political ambition of many middle level DMDK men.
“We have to spend money from our own pockets to meet the election expenditure. Many district level functionaries have lost their hard earned money contesting in the last two elections only to get defeated. We are demoralised by Captain’s decision,” a DMDK functionary revealed.
Leaders close to Vijayakanth might argue that party cadres are supporting his decision, but will they spend money for the candidates in the election, asked a group of DMDK men. “The cadres will campaign for us only if we pay money to them,” they said.
They claim that many district level DMDK leaders are holding talks with DMK and might join if they were given party posts or MLA seats. For instance, Punnam village DMDK functionary Viswanathan from Perambalur district has already joined the DMK, party sources said. Sources in Madurai DMK also confirm that many third level DMDK leaders have been contacting them with regard to joining the party, but they are waiting for high command decisions.
Meanwhile, a section of DMDK functionaries said they would not join the DMK. “We hope this time Captain will give money for candidates to meet election expenditure. Even otherwise we will fight against the Dravidian parities,” they added.
