People pool money for Yellandu seat

Gummadi Narasaiah won from Yellandu in 1983, 1985, 1989, 1999 and 2004.

Khammam: At a time when candidates spend crores of rupees, the people of Yellandu in a rare instance pooled money to pay for the nomination of their legislator, Mr Gummadi Narasaiah on Wednesday. He has been elected five times as the MLA from Yellandu on a CPI (ML) New Democracy ticket.

The people who attended his nomination rally donated Rs 1 each and pooled Rs 5,000. The amount was given to Mr Narasaiah to pay the security deposit while filing his papers. As Mr Narasaiah belongs to a Scheduled Tribe community, he needs to pay Rs 5,000 as security deposit against Rs 10,000 for general candidates.

The people came to the election office along with Mr Narasaiah and extended their solidarity to him.

The incident surprised those who are used to politicians suddenly coming into money on winning elections. Mr Narasiaah relied on farming and has lived on his earnings from five acres podu land in Tekulagudem under Karepalli mandal.

The Congress has not announced its candidate so far in Yellandu and the campaigning will pick up after the party names its nominee.
