Hyderabad: A shortage of election registration officers (ERO) for the upcoming Assembly elections is haunting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Out of the current 15 deputy commissioners, 11 are not eligible to play the role of EROs.
What adds to the crisis is that other government departments are not willing to send their officials on election duty, claiming that they too are facing staff crunch. The GHMC, however, is confident that ERO will soon be deputed from other districts of Telangana state once the draft rolls are published.
Eight out of the 15 deputy commissioners are not eligible to serve as EROs because they have already served in Hyderabad for three years, while another three do not qualify because of being residents of Hyderabad. The corporation is now on a hunt for officials from other departments.
A senior GHMC official said the corporation was seeking help from other government departments and the deputation will be expedited October 15. He said the current staff would be deputed to other districts after the district election officer and GHMC commissioner M. Dana Kishore issued directions.
