AICC defers KPCC council list

Decision in view of anticipated elevation of Rahul Gandhi as Cong president soon.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The AICC has deferred the announcement of the KPCC governing council list in view of the anticipated elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as Congress president within a few days. Earlier, KPCC president M. M. Hassan had said that the final list would be announced on Saturday. However, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi decided to put off the list after discussions with Congress working committee member A. K. Antony, it is learnt.

The AICC is likely to invite those who are in the list to New Delhi and ask them to pass a resolution to elect Mr Rahul Gandhi as Congress president. A top Congress leader told DC that this was being done because of the verdict passed by the Thiruvananthapuram munsiff court on the organisational elections and the two pending cases in the Kerala High Court against the KPCC and AICC leaderships. The munsiff court had stayed the party revamping until October 17. The High Court is waiting for the Election Commission of India’s position on the organisational revamping in Kerala.

“The AICC has decided to invite leaders to New Delhi and will request them to pass a resolution in favour of Rahul Gandhi,” said a top Congress leader. The final list may be announced either before Mr Rahul Gandhi is elected party president or after his election. The central election committee authority led by Mr Mullapally Ramachandran MP had informed that the remaining states had passed a resolution in favour of Mr Rahul Gandhi.

When majority of the MPs from Kerala opposed the seat sharing mechanism adopted by former chief minister Oommen Chandy’s ‘A’ group and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala’s ‘I’ group, the AICC had to reluctantly agree to their demands. The AICC is also worried about restoring the morale of the party supporters after the LDF government’s move against the Congress leaders on the solar judicial commission report.
