Cong. readies Telangana Thalli

HYDERABAD: The Congress, which is preparing to celebrate Telangana’s Liberation Day on September 17, will launch its own version of ‘Telangana Thalli’ that will reflect Telangana’s “different sections”. The statue, which is expected to be completed before the event at Gandhi Bhavan, appears to depict a woman from a farming community.

According to party leaders, the statue depicting a hardworking village woman was popular with the general public, but not the one depicting a wealthy woman decked out in gold jewellery. They argue that the statue should depict revolutionary women such as Chakali Ilamma and Mallu Swarajyam, who fought injustice and took up arms against tyrants. Because it was Congress that facilitated the formation of Telangana, the party understands the anguish of those who fought for the state for decades, believe party insiders.

On Wednesday, TPCC chief A. Revanth Reddy stated that this image would rekindle Telangana pride because the statue will also highlight local crops such as sugarcane and maize, in addition to reflecting local culture. Aside from that, the State flag will be unveiled and unfurled on September 17, reflecting Telangana's honour without highlighting the districts in the flag, tricolours. “In the future, the Telangana Thalli statue will be installed in all 119 constituencies.

The statue will represent different sections and will reflect Telangana pride,” he said during an informal chat at a media conference at Gandhi Bhavan. As part of a year-long strategy proposed by the party’s political strategist K. Sunil, the party has decided to celebrate Telangana’s ‘Vajrotsavalu’ beginning September 17, marking the start of the 75th year of liberation from the Nizam’s rule.
