Sandra Venkata Veeraiah neither here nor there due to law

Unless Mr Nageswara Rao too decides to join the TRS, Mr Veeraiah has no other option but to continue as TD MLA.

Hyderabad: Telangana Telugu Desam MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah is facing a peculiar situation. Describing his situation wherein the rules of Anti Defection Act do not allow him to join the TRS, Mr Veeraiah said: “I am in the air now.”

The TD won two Assembly seats in the elections. While Mr Veeraiah has decided to join the TRS, the other MLA, M. Nageswara Rao, is unwilling to shift loyalties.

According to the Anti Defection Act, it requires at least two third members of a legislature party to form a new political group or merge with another political party.

Since Mr Veeraiah constitutes only half of the TS TD, and not two-thirds, his formally joining the TRS will attract disqualification under the law.

Unless Mr Nageswara Rao too decides to join the TRS, Mr Veeraiah has no other option but to continue as TD MLA.

“At present, I am in the air. As per Assembly records, I am on the list of TD MLAs,” he said.
