LDF campaign to start on March 20
Thiruvananthapuram: The LDF will formally launch its campaign for Chengannur bypoll with a big poll convention to be held there on March 20.
The top LDF leadership will be present at the convention during which the ruling front will spell out agenda for Chengannur constituency. According to LDF leadership, BDJS decision to not to support BJP could not have come at a better time. They hope their candidate Saji Cherian will be able to make inroads into BDJS support base in the constituency.
The LDF is also wary of BJP’s stand in the constituency. It suspects that there could be attempts from UDF to have an underhand understanding with the BJP. The LDF alleges that BJP voters had cross-voted in favour of Congress candidate in 2006 and 2011 elections respectively.
The Left camp, which was demoralised after the Tripura defeat, has something to celebrate in the defeat of BJP in its stronghold Uttar Pradesh and particularly in chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s bastion Gorakhpur. The BJP defeat has clearly given an issue to the CPM to counter Sangh Parivar campaign on decimation of Left. The Left can also have a go at Congress following its drubbing in the by-polls.
Meanwhile, LDF candidate Saji Cherian began his strategy meetings in various parts of the constituency. The LDF is also trying to play the sympathy card highlighting the development work done by K.K. Ramachandran Nair in the constituency.
The LDF believes that late Nair enjoyed the goodwill of majority of the voters in the constituency. It expects this to get translated into votes in the bypoll.
