Tamil Nadu students to field candidates in ensuing poll

The manifesto promises fifty percent reservation to the women in all departments, free and compulsory education.

Chennai: All Tamil Nadu Students Association, which was formed by a group of students from Students Youth Social Movement (SYSM) and Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India and other organisations, to field candidates in the upcoming elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

“We will field candidates from tribal communities, fishermen, farmers, differently abled, activists and youth who are underrepresented in the assembly. We mainly look for the candidates who are working for the welfare of the society,” said K. Mahendran, second year BL student from Government Dr Ambedkar Law College and also the co-ordinator for All Tamil Nadu Students Association.

“So far we have identified 12 constituencies including Chepauk, Harbour, T Nagar, Egmore, Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district and Kulachal in Kanyakumari district to contest. We mainly chose Chennai constituencies as we have younger people here who worked tirelessly during the floods and got the people's admiration,” he said.

“To prevent the same family or person enjoying the power continuously we will not allow the same candidate to hold the MLA and MP post for more than two terms,” he added. Gayathri, an engineering student released the election manifesto on behalf of the All Tamil Nadu Students Association. The manifesto promises fifty percent reservation to the women in all departments, free and compulsory education, and the federal system in the country where states have more autonomy.
