Kerala leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan evaded tax, alleges BJP
Kochi: BJP on Wednesday accused CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, under a shadow following allegations of cheating against his son Binoy in Dubai, of tax evasion.
He allegedly under-invoiced the value of the property in the name of his wife, Vinodini. BJP state general secretary A.N. Radhakrishnan cited the discrepancy in his affidavit to the Election Commission during 2011 assembly elections and the declaration of assets submitted before the Governor in 2015. The affidavit stated that there were two residential plots in the name of Ms Vinodini in Thalassery valued at '4.5 lakh each. According to Radhakrishnan, one of them was sold at '45 lakh in 2014, but the same has not been mentioned in the declaration to the Governor.
He also said the plots valued at '4.5 lakh had been valued at '9 lakh by two cooperative banks under the control of CPM in Thalassery and Chokli.
A chartered accountant in Kochi, however, told DC that it was not mandatory on the part of Kodiyeri to submit details of the utilisation of money raised by him by selling off the family property.
The affidavit before the EC and the declaration before the Governor only require details of the assets and liabilities, not the movement of them, he said.
But as a public personality he could be asked to disclose the utilisation of funds raised through asset stripping, he added.
