Kerala BJP plans another yatra despite rifts

Kummanam Rajasekharan's previous Janaraksha Yatra was a damp squib, he is planning yet another Yatra highlighting development.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Trouble is brewing within the BJP which saw former State president V. Muraleedharan and his loyalist and general secretary K. Surendran walking out in a huff at the recently concluded core committee meeting. On another note, while State president Kummanam Rajasekharan's previous Janaraksha Yatra was a damp squib, he is planning yet another Yatra highlighting development. But party leaders maintain that it is an organisational yatra and not a political rally which would hit the streets.

Apart from the core committee meeting there was also the state council meeting where it was alleged that the dissident leaders had walked out from the meeting. Sources close to Mr Muraleedharan and Mr Surendran maintained that they had not walked out from the meeting, but were in a hurry to get back to Kozhikode.

However, it is reliably learnt that they left immediately after the core committee meeting held at Thiruvananthapuram and did not bother to attend the state committee meeting. But over the last several months, things have not been going smoothly for Mr Rajasekharan with a section of BJP leaders alleging that the leadership has not met the expectations of party's national leadership.

"The silence from a section of BJP leaders should be seen as the lull before the actual storm. The BJP state leadership has woken up from their deep slumber after they realized that the party cadres have become lax", said a senior BJP leader to DC.

Mr Rajasekharan's proposed Vikas Yatra is scheduled to start on Tuesday which would conclude on March 15 during which he would spend two to three days in each district to revive the respective district leadership. He is expected to attend at least 20 district level meetings over the two to three days he spends there.

Meanwhile, the BJP leadership is groping in the dark as how to deal with the warring BDJS leadership comprising of national president Tushar Vellapally and SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan. Though the State BJP leadership claims that all is well with the NDA Kerala chapter, the allies are unhappy with the way the central BJP leadership had dealt with them so far.
