Farmers’ deaths: Jagga Reddy seeks Rs 25 lakh aid to kin

He said the Central and state governments had utterly failed in addressing farmers\' issues regarding paddy procurement

HYDERABAD: Demanding that the state government provide Rs 25 lakh compensation to the kin of farmers who died by suicides in the state, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) working president and Sangareddy MLA Turpu Jayaprakash ‘Jagga’ Reddy said he would extend his support to the families of such farmers.

Addressing the media here on Monday, he said the Central and state governments had utterly failed in addressing farmers' issues regarding paddy procurement.

Farmers in Telangana chose to cultivate paddy crops and had been facing tough times due to negligence of governments in paddy procurement, he said adding that there were no proper facilities at paddy procurement centers such as gunny bags and transportation to shift crops.

Jayaprakash Reddy said they took overall responsibility of farming by providing facilities to farmers for smooth selling of crops and gave importance to the agriculture sector when the Congress was in power at the Centre and in states.

The Central and state governments must own the responsibility of farmers’ suicides, he added.

He also blamed minister T. Harish Rao for not responding to the farmers’ deaths that took place in his constituency. Reddy demanded that the government announce compensation to the farmers immediately.
