Telangana: Private contractors to fix taps in 23 urban local bodies

Water connections will be given to every house in the urban local body.

Hyderabad: The TS government has decided to hand over the Intintiki Nalla scheme to private contractors in 35 urban local bodies.

The state government has estimated the cost to be around Rs 4,403 crore. The amount would be repaid to the private contractors over seven years.

There are about 68 urban local bodies in TS. Some 23 gram panchayats were upgraded to Nagara Panchayats, and these will implement the Intintiki Nalla scheme under the Rural Water Supply Scheme.

The TS government has taken financial assistance from the World Bank to initiate the scheme in the Armor, Manugur, Jammikunta, Huzurabad, Kottagudem, Kolhapur and Medak municipalities. the GHMC has taken up the scheme in two municipalities.

It is the remaining 35 municipalities that will require about '4,403 crore for the scheme, which will be implemented by private parties as was decided in a recent Cabinet meeting.

The TS government will supply water to urban local bodies under Mission Bhagiratha. From there the water will be lifted to overhead tanks through pipelines.

Private contractors will have to lay the pipelines and construct the overhead tanks and give water connections to every house in the urban local body. Tenders will be called for this work.

Special Chief Secretary, MAUD, M.G. Gopal, said the TS government will call for the tenders within two weeks. He said that the government wants to complete the programme in all 35 ULBs within two years, depending on the supply of water under Mission Bhagiratha.
