Amit Shah's Khammam rally cancelled as cyclone Biparjoy all set to hit Gujarat

HYDERABAD: A much-anticipated public meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Khammam, which was to be addressed by Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday, has been put off, state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar announced on Wednesday.

He told reporters that Shah cannot make it to Telangana state as he is busy monitoring the progress and impact of cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to cross the Gujarat coast on Thursday afternoon.

“The home minister is supervising round-the-clock efforts needed to provide relief and possible rescue operations in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra on account of the cyclone and hence, he will not be able to make it to the public meeting. With the cyclone expected to have heavy impact on the two states, we assessed the situation and concluded that we should postpone the public meeting,” Sanjay Kumar said.

“There has been good response for the meeting, with around 20 senior leaders in Khammam and all preparations having been made. But, taking care of people is more important than politics. There is no need for any BJP leader or worker to be disappointed because of the postponement as we will hold the meeting on another date. We will demonstrate our strength in Khammam,” he said.

Party’s national general secretary Tarun Chugh said Shah is monitoring the cyclone in close coordination with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On the issue of unity in the party’s state unit, Chugh said, “Yesterday,
under Sanjay’s leadership, we announced new state executive members and that should put to rest any speculation about any rift or change in the party. We are all united and working together.”
