KT Rama Rao receives roads jolt

Workshop on guidelines for roads repairing, maintenace tomorrow.

Hyderabad: Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao on Monday admitted that the city roads were in pathetic condition.

After conducting an inspection, he gave the example of Sri Nagar Colony, Gajula Ramarao to Hitec City and Shapur as having bad roads.

Despite the GHMC stating that there were 200 waterlogging points in Hyderabad, almost six times that number, 1100, have been identified.

All departments will be issued orders that whenever a road is dug, the contractor must erect boards on the nature of work, the department, and time to be taken, failing which the contractor will be penalised plus having to pay for the road?s repair.

Mr Rama Rao said, “Over the last one and a half months, the GHMC commissioner, mayor and myself have been receiving mails, SMS, WhatsApp messages and phone calls regarding damaged roads and potholes and we have personally attended to them. I myself have driven and observed the condition. I admit that the connectivity network is in bad shape. Digging of roads has damaged the network, usually it is the city water and sewerage board or the energy department or private agencies.”

The minister was dissatisfied with road conditions at Sri Nagar Colony, Yousufguda, Gajularamaram, Quthbullapur and Shapur. He asked state government agencies like GHMC, HMWS&SB, Transco and HMDA to order contractors to erect boards at work sites displaying permission granted, time to be taken for the work and nature of work along with the contact number of the concerned contractor.

On June 16 a workshop will be held wherein the guidelines for road repairs and maintenance will be discussed. About unauthorised buildings, Mr Rao said, “The government will not spare anybody taking up unauthorised constructions; those buildings will be demolished and criminal cases will be booked.”
