Vijayawada Municipal Corporation yet to build 10,000 houses

The VMC officials completed a survey for it. But, still they could not find suitable land, explained the officials.

Vijayawada: The central government sanctioned 10,000 houses to the urban dwellers of Vijayawada city. But the officials did not finalise the beneficiaries list.
In fact, these 10,000 houses are part of the 28,000 houses sanctioned in 2007-08 financial year, stated Ch. Babu Rao, former corporator and CRDA convener of the CPM. But, at that time, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) failed to construct them, he added.

Mr Rao explained that the VMC constructed only 13,000 to 14,000 houses and handed them over to the beneficiaries. Another 5,000 houses are pending out of the 28,000 houses, he explained. Now the central government again sanctioned 10,000 houses to the city as a new initiative, he said.

At that time, the VMC officials planned to construct these houses at Ajith Singh Nagar and Kabela in the city, but did not do so as they failed to identify land. A couple of months back, the central government again sanctioned 10,000 houses for the city. The VMC officials completed a survey for it. But, still they could not find suitable land, explained the officials.

Meanwhile, chief engineer of VMC M.A. Shukoor said that the procedure for construction of the houses is under progress. He elaborated that now the VMC role is limited to construction of these houses. He said that the AP Housing Corporation would take the responsibility to construct them. The VMC would sanction required permission and hand over the work to the Housing Corporation.

The tentative areas identified for construction of these houses include Subash Chandra Bose Nagar and Dal Mill area.
