Prohibition not possible in Puducherry: Narayanasamy

His comments assume significance in the wake of a heated debate in TN on the need to bring prohibition.

Chennai: Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Sunday categorically announced that implementing prohibition was impossible in the Union Territory since it still has considerable “French influence”.

Speaking to reporters here after meeting DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister said Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were entirely different. “We have been hugely influenced by the French culture. So, to implement prohibition in Puducherry is very difficult and that is the reason why we have been clarifying that prohibition policy will not be suitable for Puducherry. Now, we are following what we had said earlier,” Mr Narayanasamy said.

His comments assume significance in the wake of a heated debate in TN on the need to bring prohibition.

Since the debate reached its peak during the election time, the AIADMK had promised to implement prohibition in a staggered manner and after retaining power Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered closure of 500 Tasmac shops.

Narayanasamy met Mr Stalin to thank him for attending his swearing-in ceremony in Puducherry. The CM said his government would ensure people get basic facilities in Puducherry.
