Hyderabad: Zilla, mandal parishad polls likely from April 22

The Election Commission of India also agreed to the proposal to conduct these elections after completion of elections to the LS in the state.

Hyderabad: Politicians will have to get busy with another campaign, this time for the local body elections.

With the clearance from the Election Commission, state government is taking steps to conduct elections to the zilla parishad and mandal parishad in Telangana state before May 23 — the results day for the Lok Sabha elections.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the state government had proposed to the State Election Commission that the process for the zilla and mandal parishad elections may go on from April 22 to May 14. However, the results should be announced only after the announcement of the Lok Sabha election results. Recently, the State Election Commission sent its proposals to the government, expressing its preparedness to conduct these elections.

The Election Commission of India also agreed to the proposal to conduct these elections after completion of elections to the LS in the state.

In this backdrop, Telangana state Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao held discussions with the officers concerned on Friday at Pragathi Bhavan.

In March this year, the state government notified reserving chairperson posts of four zilla parishads for STs, six each for SCs and BCs. According to the notification, 50 per cent of the total 32 zilla parishad chairperson posts have been reserved for women and this was decided by drawing lots in the presence of representatives of political parties as per the provisions of the TS Panchayat Raj Act, 2018.

Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahbubabad, Adilabad and Kumurambheem Asifabad ZP chairperson posts are reserved for ST candidates and chairman posts of Mancherial, Warangal urban, Karimnagar, Nagarkurnool, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Khammam are reserved for SCs.

Peddapalli, Narayanpet, Jagtial, Jogulamba Gadwal, Medak and Kamareddy zilla parishad chairman posts are reserved for BCs.
