Chennai: The BJP is likely to convene its crucial election committee meeting on March 20 to assess the present political scenario and also finalise the list of candidates for all 234 Assembly seats.

Sources in the party reveal that three candidates for each of the Assembly constituency would be selected and the list sent to the party high command for approval. This list will be released before this month end it is said. Accordingly, senior leaders will hold interview of candidates starting this Sunday at various places. Party senior and national executive member L. Ganesan will interview the party candidates at Kanyakumari while Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan will chair the interview session in the city.

Simultaneously, the sessions would be held at Tiruchy, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Kancheepuram, Vellore and Salem. “During the interviews on March 13 and 14, the party leaders will identify the candidates who are committed and have good reputation. The BJP will field its candidates who have been rendering services – social and political. We are keen on providing alternative politics, which is free form corruption and misgovernance,” a senior leader in the party said.

“Emerging second after the AIADMK in the 2014 Lok Sabha election in the state shows that the BJP is becoming popular. Our NDA won two seats whereas the opposition DMK has failed to secure a single seat on its own. Post the LS polls we see our party is increasingly being accepted by the people owing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule. I hope this trend will continue to dominate this poll scenario providing us good number of seats,” another BJP senior said.

Meanwhile, Union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping Pon Radhakrishnan who was in the city on Saturday asserted that his party was fully prepared to contest the elections alone.
