Tamil Nadu assembly session from January 23
CHENNAI: Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao will make his first-ever address to the Tamil Nadu Assembly on January 23, marking the beginning of the first session of 2017.
The first session of the Assembly every year begins with Governor's Address, which outlines the government's policies and priorities for the year. On January 24, the House is likely to be adjourned after paying rich tributes to late Chief Minister J Ja-yalalithaa, who was six time member of the House.
After a two-day recess, the House is expected to resume its duties on January 27 to take up debate on the motion of thanks to Governor's address. The Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly will meet on January 23 after the Governor's address to decide on the duration of the session.
This is the first session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly after the death of Jayalalithaa. The session is expected to be a stormy affair as it comes after demands of main Opposition DMK to hold a special session to debate the agrarian distress in the wake of a failed monsoon.
In an official release here, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretary A M P Jamaludeen said Mr Rao has summoned the House under Article 174 of the Constitution.
