Comrades bid tearful farewell to KK Mamakutty
Thrissur: The funeral of veteran communist leader K. K. Mamakutty, 95, was held at his ancestral home at Urakam here on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and party state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan paid him last respects when his body was kept at the CPM district office in the morning.
One of the senior most leaders who was the district secretary of the CPM for four decades, he died in hospital Monday afternoon. He was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments for some time. His body was also kept at Cherpu Community Hall for the public and party cadre to pay homage.
Hundreds of workers and red volunteers were part of his funeral procession of the leader known for his humble and gentle approach.
A complete party man, he had no parliamentary ambitions. Even though the party decided to field him from Ollur in the 1965 Assembly polls, he declined to contest.
He was also the state committee member of the party for more than forty years and played a crucial role in building the party in the district after the 1964 split.
His wife Lakshmikutty Amma died in 1996, and the couple had no children.
