DMK leader demands CBI probe into coal import scam

Stalin refers to CAG report, slams Tangedco.

Chennai: DMK working president M. K. Stalin has demanded a probe by the CBI into the alleged import of sub-standard coal by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), which as per the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report has ‘robbed’ the state exchequer of at least '1.559.81 crore.

The staggering loss was caused during the 2016-17 fiscal when the corporation imported sub-standard coal between October 2013 and February 2016, he said quoting the report. “If the government fails to order the CBI probe, then the DMK would be constrained to seek legal recourse,” Mr. Stalin warned in a statement here on Wednesday. He said the CAG report has stated that at a time when the international price of coal was decreasing, Tangedco had asked the contractors to enhance the price of coal.

“About '607 crore worth sub-standard coal was imported, the report says. Similarly, the CAG report had said that the massive inundation caused during the December 2015 deluge, warrants enquiry,” the DMK leader said.

“With the CAG report holding ADMK government responsible for Chennai floods in December 2015 by mishandling water release from Chembarambakkam dam, when will the Central government initiate criminal prosecution for the resultant loss of life and damage to private & public property?” Mr. Stalin tweeted.

In another tweet, he said, “Rate of growth of outstanding debts for Tamil Nadu under the “ADMK model” has ballooned to 29.85 % and the debt payment-debt receipts ratio has dipped to 12.4. Over the last 7 years, ADMK has achieved its objectives of destroying the state’s finances & curtailing development!”
