Aavin will introduce Rs 10 sachets for poor: TN Dairy development minister

Aavin milk production had gone up from 20 lakh liters per day in 2011 to 28 lakh litres per day in 2017.

Chennai: Dairy development minister K.T. Rajendra Balaji on Tuesday said Aavin would introduce 225 milli litre milk sachets for the consumption of poor people.

The minister said Aavin sale had increased and the 17 district units of the company had earned a total profit of Rs 256 crore in 2016-17and added that the company was incurring a loss of Rs 109 crore in 2010-11.

He said an ice cream factory would be set up at a cost of Rs 10 crore in Salem and a fodder company would be established at Virudhunagar at an expense of Rs 10 crore to produce 50 metric tonnes of fodder every day.

Aavin milk production had gone up from 20 lakh liters per day in 2011 to 28 lakh litres per day in 2017. The milk sale had increased to 31 lakh litres per day in the last four months. In Chennai city alone, Aavin is supplying 12 lakh litres of milk per day, showing the people's trust in Aavin, Rajendra Balaji said. The government is providing a procure price of 28 per litre for cow's milk and Rs. 35 per litre for buffalo milk.

There is widespread welcome for Aavin's new products including 11 kinds of ice creams, five varieties of sweets, seven kinds of lassi, yogurt, curd, rasagulla and half kilo curd sachets, he said.

Replying to the debate on demands for grants to his ministry, the minister also announced that 115 automated milk vending centres would be converted to Aavin sale centers and more electronic milk testing equipment would be provided to milk co-operative centers.

The minister said the infrastructure would be strengthened at Madhavaram dairy and super fast packing machines would be bought for Sholinganallur dairy, besides increasing the capacity of sewage at the farm.

He also announced 12 new milk centres, besides strengthening of infrastructure and buying of new equipment for the dairies at Salem, Tirunelveli, Tirunelveli, Dharmapuri, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai. He said milk cooling centers would be set up at Dindigul and Coimbatore.
