Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar alleges KCR has murdered democracy
Hyderabad: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has expressed concern over the attacks on Dalits in India. She said such attacks are the order of the day and the number is increasing day by day.
She was speaking to the media on Monday and claimed that Dalits are treated like slaves in this country.
The former Speaker said that the BJP led go-vernment at the Centre has failed to protect the SC/ST Atrocity Act in the wake of Supreme Court judgement on SC and ST atrocity cases.
She also criticised the TRS government and said that the expulsion of MLAs from the Assembly is totally undemocratic and the “murder of democracy in broad daylight.”
“I know very well the guidelines of the House, and that the expulsion of MLAs is totally agai-nst the Constitution,” she said.
She said that before the elections, the TRS had promised that after coming to power it will make a Dalit the Chief Minister, but after coming to power the party sacked deputy chief minister T. Rajaiah who comes from the Dalit community.
She said Telangana achieved statehood after a number of struggles but today the situation is very disappointing. The administration is like a dictatorship and there is no freedom of speech for people in the state.
She said that Dalits are tortured in Nerella by the sand mafia and the state government has failed to protect the rights of poor Dalits. The Congress party will not be a silent spectator but will fight for justice to Dalits in the state, she said.
TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that Meira Kumar is a senior parliamentarian and did much to ensure separate statehood and passage of the AP Reorganisation Bill in the Lok Sabha.
Congress to speaker: end expulsion
A Congress delegation met Assembly Speaker S. Madhusudana Chary on Monday and registered its protest at the High Court judgement revoking the expulsion of two party legislators not being implemented even after 50 days.
The delegation comprising CLP leader K. Jana Reddy, TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and party MLAs and leaders presented a memorandum to the Speaker on the issue. The Speaker told them that he would take a decision after considering the issue.
Speaking to mediapersons after submitting the memorandum, Mr Jana Reddy said the government was following undemocratic policies. It had not responded to the High Court order even after 50 days. The order was delivered on April 18, revoking the expulsion of Congress legislators Komatireddy Venkata Reddy and S.A. Sampath Kumar.
Mr Uttam Kumar Reddy said if the government did not implement the order, they would take it up with the President and make it an issue at the national level. “What is the secret behind delaying restoration of our membership after the High Court judgement,” Mr Venkata Reddy said.
Mr Chary was upset with legislator A. Revanth Reddy questioning him over the non-implementation of the HC order. At one stage, the Speaker told the Congress delegation that he would leave the meeting.
