Congress to hold 24,000 family meets

This idea was originally mooted by V. M. Sudheeran when he was KPCC president.

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC leadership is planning to organize family meetings in all the 24,000 booth committees of the party during June – July coinciding with the birth centenary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi. Senior Congress leader A. K. Antony will launch the ambitious project with inaugurating the meeting of Congressmen of Jagathy ward in Thiruvananthapuram at Carmel School on Tuesday.

Prominent Congress leaders who reside at Jagathy ward including former chief minister Oommen Chandy, KPCC chief M. M. Hassan and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala will attend the family meet. The meeting will see speeches of Indira Gandhi being relayed as well as short films on her prepared by the KPCC. It will also have material on “the anti-people friendly policies of the Narendra Modi government and the fascist approach practiced by the LDF government which recently”, sources said.

The KPCC president has already appointed two KPCC office-bearers each in all the 14 districts and DCC office-bearers in block committees to supervise the family meets, KPCC general secretary Thampanoor Ravi said. Members of parliament, legislative assembly and office-bearers of KPCC, DCC, feeder organisations and various cell committees along with their family members will attend the meets. This idea was originally mooted by V. M. Sudheeran when he was KPCC president.

Each meet would felicitate senior Congress workers and distribute Priyadarshani awards to students who have excelled in their studies. Apart from discussing local issues, the meets will plant five trees each in memory of Indira Gandhi. KPCC is expecting to plant over one lakh trees across the state as part of
the project.

This is for the first time the KPCC is holding family meeting of workers in such massive scale so as to reach out to people at all levels. Usually family meetings are held during the run-up to the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
