Kerala: Ministers told to be on guard

The party has directed all its ministers to remain in office during public visitors' hours.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM state committee has come out with a code of conduct for its ministers to make the LDF government more people friendly and accountable. The decision was taken at the two-day state committee meeting of the party which concluded here on Saturday. The party has directed all its ministers to remain in office during public visitors’ hours.

All official meetings and conferences should be avoided during visiting hours to ensure that ministers devote the entire time listening to the grievances of people and taking prompt action. The state committee also asked ministers to be cautious while making public statements. Efforts should be made at avoiding controversial, stupid and offensive statements.

The state committee’s direction comes close on the heels of E.P. Jayarajan’s reaction on legendary boxer Mohammad Ali’s death. Meanwhile, the reasons for defeat in three Assembly constituencies Poonjar, Vattiyoorkavu and Palakkad will be probed by a high-level committee comprising K.J. Thomas, Baby John and M.V. Govindan.

While K.J. Thomas will probe Vattiyoorkavu defeat, Mr Govindan and Baby John will look into Palakkad and Poonjar respectively. According to preliminary assessment of the party, organisational weaknesses and lapses on the party of local leaders were responsible for the big defeat in these constituencies. At the state committee, Palakkad candidate N.N. Krishnandas and Vattiyoorkavu candidate T.N. Seema demanded a detailed probe into the circumstances and reasons leading to their loss.

The Secretariat leaders who have been entrusted with the probe, will visit Assembly constituencies assigned to them and hold meetings of party committees at different levels. They will then submit a detailed report to the state secretariat for further action.

The defeat in other constituencies’ including Konni, Kuttiyadi will be probed by the respective district committees. A cross section of leaders, while reviewing the poll performance, referred to the inroads made by the BJP and its allies in various constituencies.

While BJP managed to open account from Nemom constituency, it came second in seven constituencies which is clearly a big political development. The members have favoured a detailed analysis of the factors that led to BJP's growth in these constituencies. The lower committees of the party would discuss all election related issues in the coming days and come back to state leadership.
