BJP's win drives party to contest RK Nagar
Chennai: The state unit of the BJP, which went into a celebratory mood rejoicing the stunning saffron sweep in the north Indian states on Saturday, said the party's performance in the north has invigorated the party in facing the upcoming local bodies polls and byelection to the R. K. Nagar Assembly constituency.
“We will go to the civic polls and R.K. Nagar byelection with more enthusiasm, which the poll outcome in Uttar Pradesh and other states has given us,” BJP state president Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan said. Speaking to reporters here on Saturday she said after the demonetisation drive, BJP’s performance in the civic elections in several states, including Maharashtra and Odisha, showed that people are with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The huge increase in tally in the number of legislators will translate into more MPs for the party in Rajya Sabha and it will in turn help pass legislations swiftly for people’s welfare,” she said and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah for the poll wins. Political opponents who claimed that BJP would be shunted out in the polls after demonetisation, have been proved wrong.
Dr Tamilisai said since 1967, the people of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing “corrupt governance” alternately by Dravidian parties viz. the AIADMK and DMK and hence they are ready to give the BJP an opportunity.
The electorate would not favour Dravidian parties. On the recent killing of a Rameswaram fisherman, the BJP leader said it was “very unfortunate” and that her party was committed to the welfare of fishermen.
“Seventy-five fishermen have been released by Sri Lanka. Do not try to judge our party by a single incident. In the past two-and-a-half years, this is the first (killing) such incident to happen. Also, this will be the last such thing,” Dr Tamilisai said.
