CPM rebels in Kasargod set to join CPI

Senior CPI leader Sathyan Mokeri would give away membership to CPM defectors on August 17.

Kasargod: Udayamperoor is all set to repeat in Bedakam of Kasargod district. If sources are to be believed, close to 200 CPM members led by former area secretary P. Gopalan Master will join the CPI on August 17 at a function in Kuttikol here.

The rebellion in Bedakam CPM has a history of six long years resulting in the weakening of the party at grassroot level. “Close to 2,000 members, including party family members under Bedakam area committee support Gopalan master. However, sensing the danger, the CPM is having discussions with many members to avoid a crossover,” said a CPM source. Senior CPI leader Sathyan Mokeri would give away membership to CPM defectors on August 17.

“The CPM is now busy holding discussion with local party leaders to prevent mass defection. But it is too late,” Gopalan Master told this newspaper. Factionalism in Bedakam originated and is being carried on by two persons, Gopalan Master heading one group and C. Balan, the other group. The fierce groupism led to election in 2011 and Gopalan Master was elected as area secretary. However, due to intervention of district leaders, Mr Balan and supporters were included in the committee thus making it a jumbo one. Gradually Mr Balan and supporters got upper hand in the party with the backing of senior district leaders.

“Gopalan Master still enjoys mass support. The rebel group’s demand is to take action against C. Balan on the basis of inquiry commission report,” said a party insider. CPM district secretary K.P. Satheesh Chandran said he would not comment on the issue as Gopalan Master has not made any statement.
