TRS seniors in race for mayor post

Being with the party since its inception, Gunda Prakash Rao is said to be lobbying for the post.

WARANGAL: After registering a massive majority in the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation elections, the TRS is caught up in deciding to decide who will be the mayor and deputy mayor.

Though TRS Urban district president Nannapuneni Narender, who won from division 19, appears to be the frontrunner for the post, party sources say there are other leaders who are lobbying for the seat.

The mayor and deputy mayor will be selected on March 15. The TRS won in 44 of the 58 divisions in the GWMC. In eight other divisions, the TRS rebels have won. These candidates are most likely to get back into the party’s fold which would bring more strength to the TRS.

Mr Narender has been with the party since its inception and active participated in the Telangana agitation. When he was to be given the TRS ticket for the Warangal East constituency, the Konda couple – Surekha and Muralidhar Rao – joined the party.

It is said that party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao decided to field Surekha from the constituency and assured Narender that he would be given the mayor position. “I have worked for Telangana for the last 15 years. I will abide by the decision of KCR without any complaints,” he said.

Another name that is making the rounds is Gunda Prakash Rao, who is said to be in talks with other leaders to see that he becomes the mayor. Mr. Prakash Rao too has been with the party since beginning. He won from division 26 with a majority of 1560 votes.

Meanwhile, the All Brahmins Officials and Professionals Association of Warangal district requested chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao to consider Vaddiraju Ganesh for the Mayor position.

President of the ABOPA, Dr. Vodithala Vishwanatha Rao, said that Vaddiraju Ganesh, who won as Corporator in the recent elections from division 27 with a huge majority, actively involved himself in Telangana movement is a suitable candidate for Mayor position.

The ABOPA requested CM KCR to give the Brahmin community their due share in the Telangana government by giving Mayor to Vaddiraju Ganesh.
