Centre open to Swachh fine

Mr Naidu felt that the Swachh Bharat mission had transformed into a public movement all over the country.

Hyderabad: Union minister for urban development M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday supported the idea of imposing fines on those who threw garbage in the open, urinated in public spaces etc.

To drive home his point, the minister mentioned how the Singapore government punished violators indulging in such acts.

Mr Naidu felt that the Swachh Bharat mission had transformed into a public movement all over the country. To give further fillip to the initiative, he said that motivational short films would be played in theatres before screening of movies.
He expressed hope that these films would further sensitise people about the need for a cleaner and hygienic India by 2019.

Speaking at “Swachhagraha for Swachha Bharat” at Kondapur, he said the ministry had received a good response (4,346 entries) for its call to send in short films on the clean drive. Out of these, 10 best films had been selected for screening in cinema halls, he said.

He said the government has adopted a three-pronged strategy for a clean India, which includes creating awareness, building toilets and imposing fines.
