Railways decision on use of regional language, big victory for DMK: M K Stalin

CHENNAI: The Railway Board clarifying that question papers set up for 'General Departmental Competitive Exams (GDCE)' could be in the local/regional languages in the respective states is a “big victory” for the DMK's long-held and consistent position on the language issue, said the party president M K Stalin.

In a communication on September 9 from New Delhi, the Railway Board had said that “doubts have been raised” as to whether instructions contained in the Board's letter amounted to directing that question papers set for GDCE “are to be set only in English and Hindi” only and not in any other language/languages.

The Railway Board said it was categorically clarifying that it does not restrict the Railways from setting up the GDCE exam question papers in local/regional languages. This is notwithstanding the fact that the practice in vogue was to have 100 per cent objective type questions.

Tagging the Railway Board's clarification in a twitter message, Mr. Stalin said that the former announcing that question papers for GDCE exam could be in regional languages including Tamil, “is a big victory for the DMK's agitation over this issue.” The DMK will continue to fight for protecting the interests of Tamil language, Mr. Stalin added in his Tamil tweet.
