Thoothukudi: Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi assured compensation for salt pan workers during the rainy season, when the DMK comes to power in the state.
Ms. Kanimozhi, who met salt pan workers at the salt manufacturing sites on Monday received petitions from the workers, many of whom asked her to take steps to ensure government compensation as is given to fishermen during the off season.
They also wanted their MP to raise her voice for housing projects for salt pan workers on lands owned by the Salt Commission of the central government. Taking heed of their demands, Ms Kanimozhi assured them that she would speak for them in Parliament. She added that her party, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, had promised to implement compensation for salt pan workers during the off season.
She suggested the creation of co-operative societies for salt pan workers for their welfare.
Thoothukudi MLA P Geetha Jeevan along with several DMK office bearers accompanied Kanimozhi during her inspection of salt pans in Thoothukudi.
