Chennai: Bus services resume after a day's gap

3,250 buses operated on Thursday.

Chennai: A day after the demise of DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, city and the rest of state returned to normal routine with all modes of transport services resuming across the state.

However, crowds were missing at Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) and in other terminuses across the state.

On Wednesday, not even a single bus was operated across the state. Even as state transport officials remained tight lipped about operating buses, buses were seen plying from depots across the state on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, MTC buses were operated in a full-fledged manner on Thursday. “We operated 3,200 buses as usual and there is no any issue today. We will continue the same as usual,” said an official, MTC, seeking anonymity.

When contacted, PWC Davidar, additional chief secretary ( transport), he said “the fact remains we are operating state-run buses in a full-fledged manner and no case of damaging buses was reported on Thursday”.

Private omni buses, call taxi and autos were seen boarding passengers. A. Afzal, president of Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Owners Association, said “all omni buses are being operated since Wednesday late night and there is a good response.”
