Palvai fought for poor and farmers: Congress
Hyderabad: Rich tributes were paid to late Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Palvai Govardhan Reddy on his first death anniversary on Saturday.
Congress leaders, activists and a large number of people recalled the immense contribution of Govardhan Reddy for the welfare of poor and downtrodden and for his proactive role in achieving statehood for Telangana. They said Govardhan Reddy continues to live in the memories of the people.
Veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Vayalar Ravi unveiled the statue of Govardhan Reddy in Munugodu in Nalgonda district. The function was attended by TPCC chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP leader K. Jana Reddy, the late Congress MP’s family members, scores of Congress leaders, activists and his supporters.
A strong proponent of Telangana statehood, Palvai represented the Munugodu Assembly constituency in Nalgonda district five times between 1967 and 2004.
His daughter and Congress incharge for Munugodu Assembly constituency, Ms Palvai Sravanthi, organised the programme.
Mr Vayalar Ravi said, “Palvai holds a unique distinction in the Congress of having worked from the Nehru regime till the tenure of Rahul Gandhi. He is an inspiration for all. He always worked for the uplift of poor and downtrodden in various capacities both at the party and government level.”
Mr Ravi said Govardhan Reddy fought relentlessly for statehood for Telangana. “He was in the forefront in protecting the interests of Telangana region in Undivided AP by taking up issues concerning Telangana at all appropriate forums,” he said.
Mr Uttam Kumar Reddy said it was Govardhan Reddy who fought for statehood for Telangana sincerely and with commitment.
“Telangana state was achieved as desired by Palvai. We will pay rich tributes to Palvai by winning Assembly elections in 2019 and forming a Congress government in Telangana state," Mr Reddy said.
He urged the people of Munugodu to ensure victory for the Congress to pay tribute to Govardhan Reddy. The meeting was attended by TPCC working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, CLP deputy leader K. Chinna Reddy, MLA N. Padmavathi and scores of local leaders.
