Jayalalithaa lists measures for flood-hit
Chennai: Denying charges that the state government did not do anything for the flood-affected, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday said the government had credited Rs 658.42 crore in the bank accounts of the flood hit people.Flood relief works for Rs 300.63 crore were implemented in Tiruvallur district. About Rs 51.68 crore was spent on flood relief works in other districts. Slum board quarters were given and Rs 111 crore was given as loans for small merchants affected by floods, she said.
Free books and note books were distributed. Besides, free uniforms for affected students and duplicate copies of educational certificates and property documents were issued immediately. The government prevented spread of infectious diseases and special camps were held to repair two-wheelers.
Focusing on schemes for greater Chennai, she said Rs 2015 crore schemes for laying roads were started and the works for Rs 682 crores had been completed. Roads for 125 km had been improved and 12 bridges were constructed. Besides, roads for 224 km was being laid and 12 bridges are under construction.
For Chennai corporation alone, schemes worth Rs 4.412 crore were completed and projects worth Rs 1,104 crores are in progress. In Chennai, 32,322 slum board houses were constructed and 6,172 houses were built in Tiruvallur district. Of the 10,455 e-service centres in Tamil Nadu, 200 are functioning in Chennai, she said.
She also mentioned the construction of new Kalaivanar Arangam, entertainment park near Chetpet lake, residential quarters and tracks for athletes in Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, swimming pool at Shenoy Nagar, completion of metro rail scheme from Koyambedu to Alandur as the State government’s schemes for the city.
“Law and order is being maintained properly and Chennai is the safest city in the country, especially for women, as per a survey done by Central government”, she said. Jayalalithaa also listed the works for drainage, roads, cement roads, platforms, street lights, drinking water schemes, bridges, electrical transformers and sub-stations in all constituencies in greater Chennai.
In her R.K.Nagar constituency, the fishing harbour at Kasimedu had been renovated at a cost of Rs 92 crores, 556 slum board houses were inaugurated for use, 480 new residential quarters were built at Aranganathapuram, and an Arts and Science College was inaugurated. Besides, the Chief Minister said she had inaugurated schemes worth Rs 180 crore and laid foundation stones for projects to the tune of Rs 193 crore at R.K. Nagar.
