KHAMMAM: Plans are afoot to run offices of irrigation department from government-owned buildings than private ones in Khammam district. The district has one chief engineer in Khammam, two superintendent engineers at Khammam and Kallur, six executive engineers and 24 divisional engineers in different areas of the district.
The government is planning to construct 34 office buildings in the district – one chief engineer, two for executive engineer, 24 sub-division, one quality control and six section offices. The buildings are estimated to cost ₹ 80 crore. Efforts are on to identify sites for construction of these buildings, preferably those owned by irrigation department itself.
Nagarjunasagar Project Left Canal is the major irrigation component in Khammam district, covering 16 mandals. Wyra, Lankasagar and Palair reservoirs are medium irrigation projects. The government has also built Bhakta Ramadasu Lift Irrigation Project by lifting water from Palair reservoir and supplying it to Tirumalayapalem, Khammam Rural, Mudigonda and Kusumanchi mandals.
Currently, six lakh acres of land are being irrigated under these projects. They are all monitored from chief engineer office located in Khammam.
