Recommend Jayalalithaa's name for Nobel Prize: Deputy Speaker V Jayaraman
Chennai: Deputy Speaker V. Jayaraman on Tuesday suggested that late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa's name be recommended for Nobel prize in the light of her scheme to prevent female infanticide in the state.
His statement reflected him in poor light since Nobel prize is not awarded posthumously. The Nobel Prize Committee had in 2007 regretted that it could not award Nobel Peace Prize to Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation, during his life time and kept the slot vacant in 1948 after his death as mark of respect.
This is not the first time that the AIADMK has suggested Nobel for Jayalalithaa. The party, in its first general council meeting in December 2016 after the death of the former chief minister, had proposed that she be recommended for Nobel Prize.
In his speech, Jayaraman, in a rare gesture, mentioned about the friendship between late chief minister M.G. Ramachandran and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi while recollecting memories about the departed leader.
