Chennai: Submit asset details or face media wrath, Mayor cautions councillors

The other resolutions included provision of world-class sports facilities at two corporation grounds.

Chennai: All corporation councillors should submit their property details to the council by Thursday night. Those who fail to do it will have to face media wrath, Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy informed the council on Wednesday.

Addressing at the final session of corporation council meet on Thursday, the mayor said that the elected representatives should set examples to society.

“Owing moral responsibility, I have furnished my property details till date. Majority of the councillors have also filed their assets over the past five years. Of the total 200 councillors, 145 ward representatives have submitted their asset details for the current year and the rest please submit the details,” he urged.

Responding to the recent CAG report on Amma canteens, the mayor said that the CAG had asked explanations from the civic body on poor fund management. The corporation will file its explanations and if there are discrepancies necessary action will be taken against errant officials, he said.

According to the CAG report, Amma canteens had become a white elephant draining the corporation exchequer and the expenditure on the canteens crossed Rs 100 crore during the year 2014 - 2015, whereas the revenue from Amma Canteens in Chennai during the period was only Rs 37.56 crore and the deficit is widening, the CAG said.

The council later adopted 15 resolutions including the administrative sanction for the flood alleviation project to be taken up at Kovalam after studying 15 water bodies in greater Chennai including the Pallikaranai marshland and Madipakkam lake. The other resolutions included provision of world-class sports facilities at two corporation grounds. Artificial turf for hockey and a dedicated ground for football will come up at the Kotturpuram corporation ground, the mayor said.
