AIADMK, DMK members trade charges against each other in Chennai corporation
Chennai: Drama prevailed in the Chennai corporation council meet on Thursday with councillors of AIADMK and DMK trading charges against each other. The corporation council that was hapless during the 2015, December floods spent more time discussing state issues like Cauvery row, Mullaiperiyar dam issue and liquor prohibition.
Adding to the political drama, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy placed on record that the previous mayor and DMK leader M.K. Stalin failed to spend the money allocated under Mayors’ Special Development Fund.
Listing out the achievements of the AIADMK in the last five years, Duraisamy said an amount of Rs 16,000 crore was spent and about three lakh development works were undertaken from 2011 to 2016. This is far higher than what was spent during the previous DMK regimes in Chennai corporation.
“In the past five years, the corporation has spent more than Rs 16,000 crore for public welfare, whereas the previous DMK mayors Stalin and M. Subramanian spent a meager Rs2,400 crore during their mayorship,” Duraisamy said.
The council also heaped praises on chief minister J. Jayalalithaa for approaching the SC to aid the state in getting its due as per Cauvery water-sharing agreement.
